How can I implement data onto Microsoft Word using a barcode scanner? - can you only use serial numbers once

In my work I have a Microsoft Word document for each unit we work.
There are 2 serial number bar code device must be manually into a Microsoft Word document.
Says Microsoft Word and have the ability to retrieve the serial numbers when you buy a barcode scanner? Or do we want to buy the software.
What software and a scanner of barcodes that you recommend?
